About ferrous sulphate
Ferrous sulphate is a pale green crystalline solid that is highly soluble in water, with a melting point of approximately 64 °C (heptahydrate). It is typically manufactured as a byproduct of steel pickling or by reacting iron with diluted sulphuric acid. In this process, iron is treated with sulphuric acid, producing ferrous sulphate and hydrogen gas.
The solution is then filtered to remove impurities, and ferrous sulphate heptahydrate is recovered by cooling, allowing it to crystallize into pale green crystals. It is widely used in water treatment, as a soil conditioner, and in the production of iron-based pigments.
Industrial applications / Uses of ferrous sulphate
•
Treating iron deficiencies.
•
Ferrous sulphate can help plants grow and thrive by providing iron, which is often difficult for plants to absorb from alkaline soils. It can also help prevent leaves from turning yellow due to iron deficiency.
•
Improving soil pH.
•
Ferrous sulphate can lower the pH of alkaline soil, making it easier for plants to access nutrients. It can also improve soil structure and microbial activity, which can increase nutrient availability and soil fertility.
•
Treating iron chlorosis.
•
Ferrous sulphate can treat iron chlorosis, a yellowing of plant leaves caused by iron deficiency.
•
Promoting chlorophyll formation.
•
Ferrous sulphate can promote chlorophyll formation, which can make plant colors more vibrant and lustrous.
•
Helping plants grow faster.
•
Ferrous sulphate can help plants grow more quickly and resist disease and insects.
