Zinc chloride is commercially manufactured by the reaction of aqueous hydrochloric acid with scrap zinc materials or roasted ore. The solution is purified in various ways depending upon the impurities present.
High-purity zinc chloride is formed from zinc and hydrogen chloride gas at 700 °C. zinc oxide reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce zinc chloride.
