About ferric chloride

Ferric chloride solution appears as a colourless to light brown aqueous solution that has a faint hydrochloric acid odour. Ferric chloride is non-combustible and Highly corrosive to most metals and probably corrosive to tissue. The boiling point and melting point of Ferric chloride is about 316 °C and 304 °C respectively.

The density is 2.9 g/cm*. It is soluble in cold water at 74.4 g/100 cc at 0 °C. Ferric chloride is readily soluble in liquids like ketones, alcohols, ethers, nitriles, amines, and liquid sulphur dioxide, but only sparingly soluble in nopolar solvents such as benzene and hexane.

Industrial applications / Uses of ferric chloride

Ferric chloride is used to detect the presence of phenol compounds in organic synthesis; e.g., examining purity of synthesised Aspirin.

Ferric chloride is used in water and wastewater treatment to precipitate phosphate as Iron 3 phosphate

Ferric chloride is used to make printed circuit boards (PCBs).

Ferric chloride is used in veterinary practice to treat over-cropping of an animal’s claws, particularly when the over-cropping results in bleeding.

Ferric chloride reacts with cyclopentadienyl magnesium bromide in one preparation of ferrocene, a metal-sandwich complex.
