It is highly soluble in water and it is deliquescent. It is a salt that is solid at room temperature, and it behaves as a typical ionic halide. Calcium chloride is prepared from limestone or by the Solway process. Calcium chloride is manufactured by the process of inputting hydrochloric acid and limestone into a reaction tank for neutralization reaction according to a certain proportion, heating a calcium chloride which is subjected to reaction, evaporating water, cooling, and crystallizing to obtain a calcium chloride product. Since it is hygroscopic in nature, it must be kept in tightly-sealed containers.

Calcium chloride has several common applications such as brine for refrigeration plants, ice and dust control on roads, and in cement. Calcium chloride is commonly used in wastewater treatment plants, additive in plastics, and blast furnaces to improve processes and characteristics. Calcium chloride is used as an agent to lower the freezing point of water, calcium chloride is very effective for stopping ice formation on road surfaces and as use as a deicer.
