Sodium Chloride is a metal halide composed of sodium and chloride with sodium and chloride replacement capabilities. Sodium chloride is soluble in water by 36.0 g / 100 g of water at 25 degrees Celsius at room temperature. Sodium chloride has a melting point of 801 °C. It is an ionic compound, being made up of equal numbers of positively charged sodium and negatively charged chloride ions. The Sodium Chloride we offer is commonly known as sea salt and occurs in the form of colourless crystals and appears as a white crystalline solid. It forms small, transparent, colourless to white cubic crystals. Sodium chloride is odorless but has a characteristic taste and is slightly soluble in ethanol. Sodium chloride is readily soluble in water and other polar solvents. Sodium Chloride is also available as aqueous solutions of different concentrations, called saline solutions. When depleted in the body, sodium must be replaced in order to maintain intracellular osmolarity, nerve conduction, muscle contraction and normal renal function. Commercial grade usually contains some chlorides of calcium and magnesium which absorb moisture and cause caking.
